The Challenge

Thornton Tomasetti, the renowned engineering firm, is known as a reliable and problem-solving partner that designs stadiums and supertall buildings. But they offer so much more, from the innovative creativity of their employees to the diversity of structures they’ve worked on to the full range of services they provide. The story was incomplete and perception of the brand too narrow. The web site had to reveal the full breadth of services to broaden the definition of what they offer.

Understanding Visitors

We tested concepts, navigation structures and designs with stakeholders and clients. The results were significant, shifting the communication strategy for the web site and beyond. We learned existing messaging didn’t resonate. We heard hyper-relevant case studies are critical. We confirmed architects want visual appeal and engineers want detail. We realized the importance of relationships and teams.

Design Strategy

Site visitors often already know Thornton Tomasetti for its iconic projects and are seeking additional evaluative information. To support this need, and encourage a call, the site plays two primary roles. First, it must make it clear Thornton Tomasetti is an innovative partner with comprehensive experience and capabilities. Second, it must support decision making, with the right information and the right contacts.

Building Something Beautiful

The site is fully responsive, scaling for PC, tablets and mobile. Using WordPress as the CMS, we built a custom responsive theme and functionality suite that enables comprehensive and timely content management across all site sections. The move to WordPress also allows them to take advantage of application-centric managed hosting, complete with robust caching for optimal site performance and rolling/automatic core security and plugin updates.

The Results

Early results are in, and we’re pleased with what we’re seeing. Site visitors are staying longer, going deeper and finding the site more easily via search engines. Even more important, we’ve helped both our client and theirs.

View Website

A construction contractor approached me at an event in Dallas and commented that not only did he love the website, but he forwarded the link to his wife, who is a school teacher, so she could share it with her students as an example of how a website should be designed.
